This cartridge was developed in the 1950s by Harold Johnson a gunsmith in Cooper Landing Alaska as a cartridge that would handle the large bears of Alaska. It was based on a necked out 348 Winchester cartridge and originally mated with a re-barreled 1886 Winchester repeating rifle.
